Norman island food - always to remember
As the British Virgin Islands has opened its doors to the rest of the world, much of the world's cuisine has become available in the BVI for guests and visiting yachtsmen. You will find a wide array of local style and Caribbean food, prepared in the manner and tastes of the generations before. Local fish and vegetable condiments are ever ready and very tasty. International cuisine of Thailand, France, Italy, UK, America, Cuba, China, as well as the ethnic dishes of Creole & Cajun exist in abundance. The Islands are filled with fine BBQ, Creative Caribbean Fusion, American Bistro, Pizzas and of course, the ever popular "Cheeseburger in Paradise". There is no shortage of excellent restaurants and inns serving local and international dishes. Most food is imported but local island specialties are often available. National specialties include seafood dishes, including lobster (the Anegada lobster is reputedly the best in the Caribbean), fish chowder, snapper, whelks, mussel pie, conch stew and shark. Roti is a flavorful East Indian flat bread, filled with meat or vegetables. Paté is a dish baked or grilled, containing spiced meat, seafood or vegetables, stuffed into pita bread. Fungi, not actually related to the mushroom, refers to a delicious mixture of cornmeal and okra, usually served with seafood and probably closest to Italian polenta in flavor and consistency. You can try the delicious local fruits such as soursop, papaya, mango, pineapple, guava, sugar apple, passion fruit and tamarind. National drinks are all kinds of rum punch and cocktails. Local spirits include Pusser’s Rum (originally produced for the Royal Navy’s pursers). Legal drinking age: 18. Over the past 8 years, the BVI National Culinary team, made up of chefs from all over the British Virgin Islands, has won bronze twice, silver five times and gold in 1997 during the prestigious "Taste of the Caribbean" Culinary Competition. The 2000 event boasted 2 BVI teams, which took both the gold and bronze medals. This competition takes place each November in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida when 32 (plus) teams from all Caribbean nations meet to compare their talents. These same creative and mouth watering dishes can be found in various restaurants throughout The BVI. Come sample some of our culinary delights ... a world of gastronomic creativity awaits you!
